Streetlight Shield Requests

The Town of St. James has been notified by Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC) that it will now charge $180 to install a shield on an eligible streetlight. Streetlight shields are sometimes used to redirect light away from nearby homes when a streetlight in the road right-of-way shines into a residence.

In the past, BEMC installed these shields at no cost. However, effective June 15,2026, BEMC now requires payment for the materials and labor associated with new shield installations.

Because this service is requested for the benefit of an individual property owner, Town Council has directed that the $180 cost be paid by the requesting property owner. Residents interested in requesting a shield should contact Town Hall. Staff will coordinate with BEMC to determine whether a shield can be installed on the specific streetlight. If BEMC confirms that a shield can be added, the resident will be notified. Payment must be received from the resident before the Town authorizes installation.

Please note that the LED streetlights installed through the recent Streetlight Update Project in the Reserve and Seaside area cannot be fitted with shields.
