NC 211 Project

NC 211 Update for August/September 2022 (08/31/2022):

The NC Department of Transportation, along with contract crews, continue to work in the beginning stages of the NC 211 project. This month, the Contractor has completed most of the clearing and grubbing activities. They continue to work on utility relocations. Similar work will continue in September. No lane closures are planned for the next month. If there is a closure, it should be performed at night to reduce the impact to the traveling public. NCDOT will continue to update its partners and the public throughout each phase of the project. If there are real impacts to be mitigated, St. James will receive a 30-day notice and comment period.

NC 211 Update for July 2022:

The NC Department of Transportation, along with contract crews, continue to work in the beginning stages of the NC 211 project. This month, the Contractor continued clearing and grubbing, utility relocations, installing silt fence, and undercut operations throughout the project.
No lane closures are planned, so none of this work should adversely impact traffic. We can expect to continue updates throughout each phase of the project. Barnhill is starting undercut operations and hauling on the North side of the project starting at their “mining operation” and heading towards Midway. The undercut operations are the start of building the two North side (West bound) lanes. There is no definitive date at the moment as to exactly when they will reach the St. James' entrance.
The "embankment" is part of this process. However, this work should not affect ingress and egress to St. James. It may affect aesthetics, but should not affect the function of our entrance.
NCDOT will continue to update its partners and the public throughout each phase of the project. If there are real impacts to be mitigated, St. James will receive a 30 day notice and comment period.

Notes:
1. Wilmington Star News, Thursday, July 14, 2022. Article on page one, mentioned a third overpass US 17 / NC 211. This is not part of the NC 211 Widening Project. The overpass project at US 17 / NC 211 is presently on hold awaiting future prioritization.
Definitions:
Grubbing - is defined as removing and disposing of all unwanted vegetative matter from underground, such as stumps, roots, buried logs, and other debris.
Undercut Operations - are when the Engineer determines that the natural soil materials in areas where fills are to be placed are undesirable in their location or condition, the Engineer may require the Contractor to remove the undesirable material and backfill with approved, properly compacted material.

NC 211 Update for April and May (04/29/2022):
The N.C. Department of Transportation along with contract crews continue to work in the beginning stages of the NC 211 project. Throughout April, crews started clearing and grubbing, and installed the orange safety fence. Similar work will continue in May. Utility relocations, starting with the sewer at The Home Place of Southport (across NC 211 from Sacred Heart Catholic Church), will begin. The contractor also plans to work on the culvert at the fire station near Executive Park Boulevard. This work should not impact traffic.
